Study program:
Minerology and Crystallography (IX semester -MsC) |
Name of subject: Structures and Properties of Modern Materials |
Instructors:
Prof. Sabina Kovač |
Status: Optional |
ECTS: 5 |
Prerequisites: Geometric Crystallography, Crystal Chemistry |
Course Objectives: Determination of defects in the structure and consideration of their influence on the physical properties of functional materials by the means of X-ray diffraction methods. |
Learning Outcomes: Establishing a connection between the degree of ordering of the structure of the crystalline substance and the physical parameters through the data obtained by means of X-ray diffraction methods. |
Content:
Theory teaching Chemical bonds in crystals. Ionic crystal lattice energy. Partial covalent bonding. Bond valence. Bond length and influence of non-bonding electrons. "Band" structure of metals, insulators, semiconductors. Defects in crystals. Non-stoichiometry and solid solutions. Diffusion in solid state. Phase transformations. Plastic deformations. Structures of various types of materials: conductors, dielectrics, semiconductors, superconductors, electrostatic materials, ferroelectric, piezoelectric, pyroelectric, optoelectronic materials, memory effect materials, thin films and epitaxy. Practical teaching Exercises are following the lectures. |
