Study program:
Minerology and Crystallography (VIII semester -MsC) |
Name of subject: Ore Microscopy |
Instructors:
Prof. Aleksandar Pačevski |
Status: Optional |
ECTS: 5 |
Prerequisites: - |
Course Objectives: The objective of the course is to introduce students into an area that includes theoretical settings of the phenomenon of appearance and quantification of interaction of reflected polarized light and polished crystal surface. |
Learning Outcomes: Mastering the standard methods used for the quantitative determination of optical characteristics and microhardness of ore minerals. |
Content:
Theory teaching Introduction. Optics of reflected light - Interaction of light and opaque crystalline environments. Reflection of linearly polarized light with isotropic and anisotropic crystalline environments. Reflection in crossed Nicols. Introduction to measurements of reflectivity. Measuring technique. Measurement procedure. Reference areas (standards). Measurement of the reflection of ore minerals in oil. Determination of optical constants n and k. Quantitative measurements - determining the color of ore minerals. Quantitative measurements - microhardness of ore minerals. Structural characteristics of ore minerals. Primary structures. Secondary structures and textures of minerals. Special structures and textures of ore minerals. Practical teaching Practical and performed on specially equipped microscopes. |
