Name of subject: Crystal Optics
Instructors:
Prof. Sabina Kovač
Status: Compulsory
ECTS: 5
Prerequisites: -
Course Objectives:
Introduction to methods for determination the optical properties of minerals and other crystalline matters in the transmitted polarized light and handling with a polarization microscope and its additional parts.
Learning Outcomes:
Understanding the effects that occur in the interaction of crystalline matter - polarized light.
Content:

Theory teaching
The nature of light. Polarization microscope. Index of refraction. Methods for determining the index of refraction. Optically isotropic matters. Double refraction. Nikol’s Prism. Optic anisotropic matters. Optic anisotropic 1-axis crystals. Indicatrix, birefraction. Optically anisotropic 2-axis crystals. Indicatrix of two-axis crystals. Phase difference and interference in anisotropic crystals. Interferent colors. Michel-Levi’s map. Additional parts - compensators. Optical orientation. Color and pleochroism. Investigation in the convergent polarized light of uniaxial and two-axial minerals. Optical sign. Optical axis angle. Optical anomalies.
