Physical Chemistry of Mineral Deposits

Study program:
Economic Geology (VII semester -MsC)
Petrology and Geochemistry (VII semester -MsC)
Name of subject: Physical Chemistry of Mineral Deposits
Instructors:
Prof. Rade Jelenković
Status: Optional
ECTS: 5
Prerequisites: -
Course Objectives:
Acquiring of general knowledge about physical-chemical phase diagrams, providing the necessary knowledge about physical-chemical interpretation of genetic conditions of characteristic mineral phases, paragenesis and mineral associations in endogenous, exogenous and metamorphic conditions.
Learning Outcomes:
Acquiring of knowledge in the field of analysis of physical-chemical phase diagrams, conditions of genesis of characteristic mineral phases, paragenesis and mineral associations in endogenous, exogenous and metamorphic conditions of formation of mineral deposits. Upgrading the acquired knowledge about the genesis of metallic and non-metallic mineral deposits.
Content:

Theory teaching
Basic terms and laws of physical chemistry, physical-chemical processes and mineral deposits, the composition of matter, magma, crystal defects, melts, phase diagrams, Silicate systems and magmatic processes, water-silicate systems, Sulphide-water systems and hydrothermal processes, silicate-sulphide-water systems and magmatic processes, hydrothermal systems, exogenous systems and physical-chemical processes, metamorphic processes and physical-chemical processes.

Practical teaching
T, P, V, E - examples and application in geology. Studying of physical-chemical processes and the genesis of mineral deposits. Solid solutions and mineralization. Crystal defects. Construction of single component and two-component phase diagram. Construction of three- component phase diagram. Magmatic processes. The properties of water. Fluid inclusions. Alterations.
