Study program:
Regional geology (VIII semester -MsC) |
Name of subject: Structural and Tectonic Analysis |
Instructors:
Prof. Branislav Trivić |
Status: Compulsory |
ECTS: 5 |
Prerequisites: - |
Course Objectives: The objective of the course is to introduce students with standard mathematical and statistical methodologies of structural analysis. Besides these two approaches students will learn about quantification of structural and tectonic parameters of rock’s deformation. |
Learning Outcomes: After completing the course student will be able to understand the critical analysis of documented material on attitude, genesis and relative chronology of structural elements. This includes a detailed literature research on published materials and different opinions of geotectonic zoning for a specific research area. Finally, the student will offer their own interpretation of collected published and unpublished structural data. |
Content:
Theory teaching Deformation of rocks. Criteria in the case of brittle, plastic and semi-plastic deformations. Drag folds as a shear direction indicator. Variation of layer thicknesses in the set. Kinematic analysis in shear zones and fault zones. Mezoscopic and microscopic shear sense indicators in ductile shear zones. C and s-structures in the outcrop area within the shear zones, shear indicators in mylonites. Analysis of rupture and fault systems. Introduction to paleostress analysis. Procedures of tectonic profile construction. Introduction to balanced geological cross-sections. Practical teaching Reconstruction of the fold based on flexural slip and fold asymmetry (s, z, m or w structures), dip isogon classification. Fault kinematics, fault slip analysis and shear indicators (striations, mineral fiber lineations...). Hansen’s kinematic method. Reconstruction of shear stress condition in the conjugated plane surface, stress axes and the direction of shortening and elongation. Paleostress tensor determination. Measurement of homogenious deformation, length change, changes of the angle and shape, ellipsoid of deformation. Construct a fold cross-section, in tectonic profile, using the arc (Busk) method. Markers of deformation, use of linear markers or symmetric and originally ellipsoidal forms. Fry’s method. Interpretation of statistical net diagrams. |
