Course Objectives:
Getting acquainted with the fundamentals of evolution theory, the ideas before Darwin, and modern synthesis
Learning Outcomes:
The student will be introduced to the history of the idea of evolution; the creation of the theory of evolution by natural selection and the subsequent development of this theory. A particular emphasis will be placed on the relationship between evolution and genetics, as well as the negative consequences that led to the misinterpretation of Darwin’s theory. After this course, the student will be able to independently discuss many of the current scientific problems, as well as to argue in the discussions about evolution.
Content:

Theory teaching
Developing ideas about the emergence of living beings in the past - creationist ideas; evolutionists before Darwin. Darwin’s life and work, the publication of the "Origin of species". Alfred Wallace. Reactions to the theory of evolution in the 19th and 20th centuries. Mendel and the founding of genetics. Mechanisms of evolution - mutations, variations, migrations, natural selection, genetic drift. The concept of species and speciation (phyletic gradualism and punctuated equilibrium). Phylogenetics. Macroevolution. Misuse of Darwin’s theory. The relation between evolution and religion.

Practical teaching
Watching documentaries on evolution, discussion on current topics, presentation of student seminar papers
