Course Objectives:
The purpose of the course is that students acquire basic crystallographic education in terms of external and internal symmetry, which is a consequence of the periodicity of the crystal structure of minerals and synthetic materials, and that they can interpret the results obtained by the X-ray diffraction method on polycrystalline material.
Learning Outcomes:
During this course, students will learn: elemental macro-symmetry operations. By applying them, they will be able to determine the symmetry of crystal models or crystals; they will be classified into one of 7 crystal systems and 32 crystal classes. Students will learn about basic structural types, about X-ray diffraction on polycrystalline material and interpretation of powder diagram.
Content:

Theory teaching
Symmetry of crystals. Boundary elements of the crystal. Crystallographic laws of symmetry. Goniometry. Stereographic and gnomic projection of crystals and drawing of stereographic projections. Nomenclature and systematization of 7 crystal systems within the 32 crystal class. Crystal twinning. Simple and complex symmetric operations. The concept of symmetry and the parameters of the unit cell. Number of formula units in a unit cell. Crystallochemical laws. Polymorphism. Isomorphism. The highest packing. Coordination of ions and atoms. Overview of some groups of crystal structures of minerals. X-ray properties. Interaction of X-ray diffraction and a crystal lattice. Brage’s law. The fundamentals of X-ray diffraction analysis. Interpreting X-ray powder diagram, identification of crystalline phases. Crystallographic databases and their search.

Practical teaching
Exercises are followed by lectures according to the method units.
