Course Objectives: Introduction to basic thermodynamic principles relevant to petrology, the character of magma and the physico-chemical processes of formation of magmatic, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks based on experimental and theoretical considerations and their application to natural systems. |
Learning Outcomes: Ability to understand character of magmatic, sedimentary and metamorphic processes and their products and training for higher levels of studies |
Content:
Theory teaching Introduction. Thermodynamics and petrogenesis. Kinetics. Magmatic systems: Basic principles of crystallization, phase rule - phase diagrams. Creation and character of magma, vesicle and fragmentation, physical and thermal dynamics of magmatic bodies. Magmatic extrusion. Differentiation of magma. Physico-chemical processes of formation of sedimentary rocks. Physico-chemical processes during formation of metamorphic rocks. Practical teaching Exercises according to the lecture units include practical work and self-solving of the given problems and discussion of the results. Presentation and discussion of student essays on a given topic. |

Conduct of the Course: Lectures in power point presentations. Exercises: demonstration of the method of testing, application and solving of the given problems (mathematical calculations of petrogenetic parameters, phase diagrams of crystallization and melting, AKF and ACF diagrams, discriminating diagrams, solutions of given problems: interactive discussion in order to overcome the given objective. |
