Course Objectives: Introduce students to methods used in mineralogy to extract and identify minerals |
Learning Outcomes: Training students for proper problem setting, selection of adequate methods and independent work on available instruments. |
Content:
Theory teaching Methods in mineralogy, problem setup, method selection. Methods of extracting minerals. Methods for determining the size of the grain. Analysis of the mineral compostion of sands, , coloring of the minerals. Methods of measuring the density of minerals. Methods of measuring the hardness of minerals. Thermal characteristics of minerals DTA, TGA, thermomicroscopy. Spectroscopic properties of minerals. Color of the minerals. IC spectroscopy. Electron microscopy. TEM, SEM, electron diffraction. Practical teaching In all available instruments, students work independently, examine representative samples, record results, critically comment. |
