Applied Mineralogy

Course Objectives:
The objective of the course is to establish a clear link between mineralogy and technology, architecture, medicine, art, archaeology through setting and solving the different problems (case study).
Learning Outcomes:
Students are capable to select the adequate mineralogical methods related to the solving problems in the different investigation area.
Content:

Theory teaching
Mineral pigments. Abrasives. Biomineralogy. Minerals that cause or accelerate silicosis. Asbestos. Purification of drinking water, pH correction, softening of water, molecular sieves. Ceramic and refractory materials. Bonding materials, plasticizers. Mineral composition of aggregates and binders in the restoration of buildings.

Practical teaching
Students exercises on the representative samples, record the results, critically comment. They are setting up and solve specific tasks (Case Study).

Conduct of the Course:
Lectures: classical Students exercises on all available instruments. At the end of the course, using the obtained results students write seminar work.
