Course Objectives:
Acquiring the knowledge about basic characteristics of individual minerals. |
Learning Outcomes:
The ability to recognize the most important minerals on the basis of their physical properties, macroscopic appearance, and determination using the polarized light microscopy. |
Content:
Theory teaching
Introduction. Classification of minerals. Native element minerals. Sulfides. Halogenides. Oxides. Hydroxides. Phosphates. Carbonates. Sulphates. Classification of silicates. Tectosilicates (quartz, K-feldspar, plagioclase, zeolites). Phyllosilicates (muscovite, biotite, chlorite group, serpentine, talc). Inosilicates (pyroxene group, amphibole group). Cyclosilicates (beryl, tourmaline). Sorosilicates (epidote). Nesosilicate (olivine, garnets, staurolite). Practical teaching
Students use the available collection of minerals for exercises - macroscopic identification. In the part of the course - silicates, students use polarization microscope for determination of basic petrogenetic minerals. |
