Course Objectives: The objective of the course is to familiarize the student with the aspects of General Mineralogy as a basis for monitoring the Systematics of Minerals in the second semester of academic studies. |
Learning Outcomes: By mastering the course the student is able to follow the material from the Systematics of Minerals course, as well as to recognize minerals macroscopically and microscopically. |
Content:
Theory teaching Introduction to mineralogy. Crystalline and amorphous state of matter. Elements of geometric crystallography. Crystal systems and twinning. Crystal and crystalline aggregates. Pseudomorphosis of minerals. Chemical composition and formulas of minerals. Isomorphism and polymorphism. Physical crystallography. Genesis of minerals. Optical properties of minerals. Polarization microscope and its parts. Basics of orthoscopic observation of minerals in a polarization microscope. Basics of conoscopic observation in a polarization microscope. Practical teaching Exercises are practical and follow the content of the lectures. |
