Course Objectives: Application of geostatic analyses in geotechnical engineering. Different methods of geostatic calculations for solving various problems in geotechnics. |
Learning Outcomes: Practical application of different methods for analyses stress state, lateral earth pressure and soil stability in geotechnical engineering. |
Content:
Theory teaching Vertical stresses beneath loaded areas. Stress distribution in soils due to surface loads using simple method. Stress distribution in soil due to surface loads using theory of elasticity. Superposition of stress, pressure isobars, pressure in heterogeneous soil. Mohr circles, Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion. Lateral earth pressure in semi-infinite soil. Lateral earth pressure on retaining wall - analytical and graphical methods. Stability of retaining walls. Bearing capacity and settlement of retaining walls. Stability of slopes: general considerations and assumptions, factor of safety, analyses with total and effective stresses. Different shape of sliding. Methods of stability analysis of slope for plane surface of failure. Methods of stability analysis of slope for circular surface of failure. Methods of stability analysis of slope for composite surface of failure. Specificity of slope stability analyses in stiff fissured rocks. Back analysis of slope stability. Progressive failure. Neutral line. Seismic slope stability. Three-dimensional slope stability. Slope stabilization: removal and replacement of sliding mass, drainage, retaining structures, soil reinforcement. Tunnels: stresses and movements around tunnel. Subsurface stresses. Subsidence of terrain due to tunnel excavation. Practical teaching Numerical excercises which students work indepedently. |
