Study program:
Geophysics (VII semester -BsC) |
Name of subject: Magnetometry and Paleomagnetism |
Instructors:
Prof. Vesna Cvetkov |
Status: Compulsory |
ECTS: 5 |
Prerequisites: - |
Course Objectives: The aim of the course is that students acquire the knowledge of the interpretation of anomalies of the Earth’s magnetic field, as well as the theory of paleomagnetism. |
Learning Outcomes: Learning outcomes of the course is the practical application of the results of the measured Earth’s magnetic field in the framework of different types of geological investigation, as well as in the practical application of paleomagnetism in the definition of geodynamic processes. |
Content:
Theory teaching Geomagnetic databases. Geomagnetic survey. Processing of magnetometer data (terrestrial and aeromagnetic). Creating GRID, Filtering. Decorrugation. Processing and interpretation of TMI. Eccentricity of geomagnetic anomalies (conventional and non-conventional TMI transformations). Visualization of magnetometer data. Direct and reverse task. Quantitative and qualitative interpretation of magnetometer data. Transformations of TMI independent of the properties of the geomagnetic field. Criteria’s for the selection of the outcrops- profiles for paleomagnetic investigation. Measurements in the field. Component analysis. Field tests of stability. Fisher’s distribution. Determination of the mean magnetic vector. Magnetic properties of rocks and minerals. Analysis of AMS. Application of paleomagnetic investigation. Practical teaching Exercises are computational, using the program both on mathematical models and on data obtained from the field. |
