Methods of Stratigraphic Research

Study program:
Geology of oil and gas (VII semester -MsC)
Minerology and Crystallography (IX semester -MsC)
Petrology and Geochemistry (IX semester -MsC)
Regional geology (VII semester -MsC)
Geophysics (IX semester -MsC)
Name of subject: Methods of Stratigraphic Research
Instructors:
Prof. Ljupko Rundić, Prof. Katarina Bradić Milinović
Status: Optional
ECTS: 5
Prerequisites: -
Course Objectives:
Mastering of individual stratigraphic methods and training for working on specific tasks in geological organizations, but also for further training.
Learning Outcomes:
Knowledge on classical and contemporary stratigraphic methods used in scientific and professional projects.
Content:

Theory teaching
Subject of research. Classical methods: Lithostratigraphy. Marker horizons, rhythms, cycles. Biostratigraphy, categories and types of biozones. Modern methods: Seismic stratigraphy, seismic signals, sequences and sections. Sequence stratigraphy, sequence definitions, system tracts and surface boundary. Change of sea level. Cyclostratigraphy, cycles, Milanković orbital parameters. Climate parameters and astronomical standards. Chemostratigraphy, stable isotopes of carbon, strontium and oxygen. Stratigraphy of "events" (Event stratigraphy). Unstable isotopes and arrays. Radioactive carbon method. Magnetostratigraphy, Earth’s magnetic field. Remanential magnetism, migration, and rotation of Earth’s magnetic poles. Complex (integrated) stratigraphic research.

Practical teaching
Projections and illustrations related to individual teaching units. Field exercises. Visit to reference geological-geophysical institutions (NIS-GazpromNeft, Geomagnetic Institute, etc.). Independent research work.
