Dewatering in Mineral Processing

Study program:
Environmental Engineering (IX semester -MsC)
Mineral Processing (IX semester -MsC)
Name of subject: Dewatering in Mineral Processing
Instructors:
Prof. Milena Kostović, MSc Marina Blagojev
Status: Compulsory
ECTS: 6
Prerequisites: -
Course Objectives:
Introduction to the dewatering as operation in mineral processing in the aim of solid and liquid separation. Introducing with the technological parameters of importance for the selection of this phase of the process, as well as with the technological, economic and environmental effects that are realized in mineral processing and waste and waste water recycling.
Learning Outcomes:
Qualifications for independent selection of appropriate dewatering operation on the basis of analysis of technological factors, as well as for selection of flowsheet for these phase of process as part of an integrated process flowsheet, with the selection of appropriate machines and devices.
Content:

Theory teaching
Theoretical principles: solid - liquid separation; disperse systems; flocculation and coagulation. Operations of dewatering: draining, thickening, filtration, drying. Thickening - thickening by gravitational force; thickening by centrifugal force; factors influencing on thickening; sedimentation velocity; parameters of process. Filtration – batch filtration; continuous filtration; the phases of cake forming; filtration velocity; parameters which influence on the filtration. Drying; material and heat balance of drying. Machines and devices for dewatering.

Practical teaching
Laboratory exercises (experimental and theoretical); introducing with all phases of dewatering with certain examples of various types of mineral raw materials and wastes.
