Rock and Soil Mechanics

Course Objectives:
The objective of the course is to introduce students with with the physical, mechanical, tehnical properties and rock and soil material response to the natural or human activity and stress state changes, slope stability etc.
Learning Outcomes:
The course will provide students to understand the problems of interaction between the working environment (rock and soil) and mining operations, and determining the basic rock properties as the starting point for further mining activities.
Content:

Theory teaching
Physical, mechanical and technical properties, rock and soil deformability properties as basis for determination calculation parameters for further analyses. Introducing to the importance of research methods for studying the stress state and the impact of mining operations on rock and soil material. Special attention will be dedicated to introduction to the basics of the mining facilities stability analysis (underground facilities and open-pit and landfills slopes) and bearing capacity calculation methods.

Practical teaching
Students will be introduced with methods for rock and soil physical, mechanical and deformability properties laboratory testing. Basic rock and soil classification systems will be studied. The basic methods for determining the stress state in the rock and soil massif and the soil bearing capacity will be shown. Study of the basic analysis methods of the underground chambers and slope stability.
