Heat Engines

Study program:
Mine Mechanization (VII semester -BsC)
Petroleum Engineering (VII semester -BsC)
Name of subject: Heat Engines
Instructors:
Prof. Aleksandar Madžarević
Status: Optional
ECTS: 5
Prerequisites: Thermodynamics
Course Objectives:
The basics of theory of engines with internal and external combustion are given in the course. The aim of the course is to prepare engineers for proper selection, exploitation and maintenance of engines in various fields of mining and other fields of application.
Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of the course, the student is capable to: analyze theoretical and real cycles of the internal combustion engines, understand the energy transformation in the engine; to calculate and analyze engine performance indicators; to understand and analyze schemes of boilers, as well as to calculate the useful work obtained by transforming heat in the engines with internal and external combustion.
Content:

Theory teaching
Basic deffinitions. Internal and external combustion engines. History of heat engines. Importance and implementation in transport and energetics. Internal combustion engines. Classification. Four stroke and two stroke engine working principles. Advantages and disadvantages of two stroke engines. Theoretic, semi theoretic and real cycles of internal combustion engines. Analyses of indicator, effective and complex values of internal combustion engine. Determination of main engine dimensions. Energy balance for the engine. Construction of the engines. Engine operating systems (fuel supply, lubrication, cooling, ignition, starting, etc.). Application in mining and oil industry. External combustion engines. Theoretical cycles. Classification. Steam boilers. Principle of operation. History of boilers. Firebox and its characteristics. Steam, water and air heaters. Capacity and efficiency. Characteristic examples of boiler construction. Heat turbines. Classification. Theoretical basics of the heat turbines (steam and gas). Principle of work. Impulse and reaction turbines. Gas turbine plants, performance and efficiency. Characteristic examples of steam and gas turbines applications.

Practical teaching
Problems related to the topics given in the lectures are being addressed. Preparation of written and oral presentation of seminar work is envisaged, to provide more detailed elaboration of the topic presented in the lectures.
