Advanced Materials

Study program:
Geotechnics (II semester -PhD)
Mining Engineering (IV semester -PhD)
Name of subject: Advanced Materials
Instructors:
Prof. Suzana Lutovac
Status: Optional
ECTS: 10
Prerequisites: /
Course Objectives:
The objective of the subject is to introduce students to the latest advanced non-metallic materials: ceramic, polymeric and composite materials. The acquired knowledge provides conversance of the technology of obtaining advanced materials, their characteristics, optimal choice of materials for a specific purpose, as well as predicting the behavior of materials in different conditions of exploitation. Further directions for conquering new materials and improving the properties of existing materials.
Learning Outcomes:
Within this course, fundamental and applied knowledge in the development, production, modification and application of modern materials in various industrial and other fields are studied. It is of great importance for the practice to know the mechanical and other characteristics of polymers, composites and ceramics in order to determine the optimal connections between stress and deformation, elasticity and microplasticity, breakage and high elasticity. Application of theoretical and practical knowledge to calculations and selection of materials for certain industrial purposes.
Content:

Theory teaching
• Introduction to the science of advanced materials. • Material selection methodology in engineering. • The most commonly used modern materials: ceramic, polymeric and composite materials. • Basics of ceramics and glass. Characterization of ceramic materials. Contemporary processing of ceramic powders of materials. Porous inorganic materials. • Basics of the structure and properties of polymeric materials. Processing of polymeric materials. Thermoplastic and thermostable polymers. Auxiliary raw materials, additives, plasticizers, fillers. Elastomers. Non-metallic coatings. Application of polymer materials in mining. • Introduction to composite materials. Composition and properties of the composite. Production of composite materials. Characterization of composite materials. Functional and structural composites. Polymer composites and their application in mining. • The application of theoretical knowledge to the calculations useful for industrial purposes.

Practical teaching
• Testing of ceramic materials. • Testing of thermoplastic and thermostable polymers. • Elastomers and conveyor belts - standard tests. • Non-metallic coatings as wear and abrasion protection - centrifugal pump circuits, tubes for the transport of fluid and pulp.
