Protection from Blasting

Study program:
Environmental Engineering (VIII semester -BsC)
Underground Construction (VIII semester -BsC)
Name of subject: Protection from Blasting
Instructors:
Dr Miloš Gligorić, Prof. Suzana Lutovac
Status: Optional
ECTS: 5
Prerequisites: -
Course Objectives:
Acquiring knowledge about protection measures in transport, storage of explosives, as well as during blasting operations. Measures of protection during handling of explosives, as well as measures of protection in order to reduce the negative effects that accompany blasting operations.
Learning Outcomes:
Education of students - future engineers in the implementation of protective measures during handling and performance of blasting operations.
Content:

Theory teaching
The entire curriculum is divided into three parts, such as: transportation and storage of explosives, blasting operations and effects caused by blasting. The first part deals with problems related to the transport of explosives from production plants to mine storage. Then, the conditions for construction of the explosive magazine are given, both on the surface and underground. Keeping records and control of explosive devices. In the part that involves the execution of blasting operations, the documentation for the execution of blasting is shown, measures of protection in various systems for initiating charges. Blasting conditions in environments with methane or hazardous coal dust. Protective measures for special blastings: in the manufacture of mine shafts, in compressed air environments, in the environment under the pressure of water. Blasting operations in salt mines, blasting operations for the purpose of extinguishing and isolating pit fires, blasting in order to prevent mountain strikes and gas penetration. In the third part, the behavior of construction and mining objects during blasting is shown, as well as the criteria for the assessment of the shock, the determination of safety distances as a result of the effects of blasting (shocks, flying pieces of rocks, air strikes and protection against the resulting gases).

Practical teaching
Calculations related to the construction of explosive magazines. Getting acquainted with initiators and equipment for filling boreholes with explosives; calculating the network for electrical initiation of shots; calculating the soil oscillation law; determining safety zones due to shock, flying pieces of rocks, air strikes and determination of safety zones of gas protection. Practical work at the university mine at Avala. Visiting the explosive magazine.
