Study program:
Minerology and Crystallography (VIII semester -MsC) |
Name of subject: Crystal Chemistry |
Instructors:
Dr Predrag Dabić |
Status: Compulsory |
ECTS: 5 |
Prerequisites: - |
Course Objectives: The objective of the course is that students acquire basic crystallochemical education in terms of internal symmetry and chemical composition of minerals, which is a consequence of the periodic arrangement of the atoms in the crystal lattice i.e., three-dimensional periodicity of crystalline substances. |
Learning Outcomes: During this course, students will learn: laws of crystal chemistry • Pauling rules • polymorphism • isomorphism • coordination number of atoms and ions • types of close packing of spheres • basic types of structures: metals, alloys, ionic crystals, oxides, sulfides, carbonates, sulphates, phosphates and silicates |
Content:
Theory teaching Crystallochemical laws. Ionic radii. Atomic radii. Pauling’s rules. Polymorphism. Isomorphism. Close packing of spheres. Types of close packing of spheres. Coordination of ions and atoms. Coordination polyhedra. Overview of basic groups of crystal structures of minerals. Native elements and metals. Ionic crystals (salts). Sulfides. Oxides. Carbonates. Sulphates. Phosphates. Aluminosilicates. Silicates. Practical teaching Exercises are following lectures in accordance to the above-stated topics. |
