Basics of Paleontology

Course Objectives:
The goal of this course is to acquire knowledge about basic principles and methods of paleontology, types of fossils and fossilization, and methods of their study.
Learning Outcomes:
Through this course, students gain knowledge of the importance of palaeontology and are able to apply acquired knowledge of fossils in geological explorations.
Content:

Theory teaching
Definition and tasks of Paleontology. Organisms and environments. Fossils: characteristic fossils, perzistent fossils, facial fossils, problematic fossils and pseudofossils, subfossils, living fossils, ichnofossils. The notion of species and genus in paleontology. Paleontological and biological nomenclature. Philologeny and ontogeny. Origin and characteristics of fossil associations. Tafonomic processes and stages: biocenosis, tanatocenosis, necrocenosis, lyptocenosis, taphocenosis, orictocenosis. Preservation of fossils and the possibility of reconstruction. A review of biostratigraphically significant groups of fossil organisms.

Conduct of the Course:
Lectures are followed by contemporary visual presentations and acquaintance with fossil material from the palaeontological collection. The preparation of a colloquium is envisaged.
