Study program:
Geophysics (VI semester -BsC) |
Name of subject: Fundamentals of Geomagnetism |
Instructors:
Prof. Vesna Cvetkov |
Status: Compulsory |
ECTS: 5 |
Prerequisites: - |
Course Objectives: The aim of the course is that the student learns the basic concepts related to the Earth’s magnetic field, to understand the basic characteristics that influence the living and inanimate world, as well as procedures that can apply to obtain data that are important for defining the area beneath the Earth’s surface. |
Learning Outcomes: Learning outcomes of the course is to acquire basic knowledge and competencies required for further training to work in specialized teams dealing with geomagnetic research, as well as a good basis for further study of the procedures related to the processing and interpretation of collected data. |
Content:
Theory teaching Earth’s magnetic field (magnetosphere, ionosphere ...). Planetary dynamo. Elements of the Earth’s magnetic field and geomagnetic coordinates. Analysis of the Earth’s magnetic field: the main, normal and anomaly field. Gaussian harmonic analysis and IGRF model. Changes of the magnetic field in time (secular daily variations, pulsations and magnetic storms). Magnetic properties of minerals and rocks. Induced and remanent magnetization. Ferromagnetism. Types of remanent magnetization. Application of geomagnetic research. Methods (types) of measurements in the geomagnetism. Mapping and locating. Instruments in geomagnetism. Field data processing. Practical teaching Determination of the elements of the geomagnetic field. Geomagnetic coordinates. Calculation of the normal field (Gaussian harmonic analysis and IGRF model). Procedures for removing the normal field from the measured data. Getting to know the magnetometer (gradiometer) and measuring with it. Procedure for correcting the measured data for daily variation. Basic procedures of processing the geomagnetic data (from the database and performed measurements). Visit to the geomagnetic observatory. |
