Theoretical Principles of Leaching and Extraction of Mineral and Technogenic Raw Materials

Study program:
Mining Engineering (IV semester -PhD)
Name of subject: Theoretical Principles of Leaching and Extraction of Mineral and Technogenic Raw Materials
Instructors:
Prof. Milena Kostović
Status: Optional
ECTS: 10
Prerequisites: graduated engineer-master
Course Objectives:
Training students for independent scientific and research work in the field of leaching and extraction of mineral and technical raw materials. Study of basic principles of dissolution of metals, minerals and methods for separating metals and compounds from solution
Learning Outcomes:
Acquired knowledge that: enables scientific research in this field, transfer of scientific achievements into practice, and involve or lead research into the complex valorization of mineral and technical raw materials, can help in the design of the plant for the leaching and extraction of mineral and technical raw materials.
Content:

Theory teaching
Physicochemical characteristics of the leaching. Solubility, diffusion, effect of solusion components and solvent properties. Leaching of metal. Chemical and electrochemical reactions of mineral leaching (oxides, carbonates, silicates, sulfides). Mechanism and dissolution kinetics, Debye-Huckel theory, thermodynamic and kinetic bases for selecting the method of leaching; basic processes of leching, leaching of technogenic materials (tailings, ash, etc.). Leaching equipment. Metal extraction from the solution. Types of liquid-liquid extraction. Extraction equipment. Ion-exchange and ion-exchangers. Separation of metals and metal compounds from the solution (crystallization, precipitation, ionic flotation, membrane processes, cementation, reduction).

Practical teaching
Laboratory work, the application of certain methods of leaching will depend on the theme and the goal of doctoral dissertation
