Course Objectives: Introduction to students of all study programs of the Geology department on morphology, origin, kinematics and classification of geological structures and their significance in fundamental and applied geological studies. |
Learning Outcomes: After completing the course, the students will be able to recognize, describe and statistically analyze all the basic types of geological structures such as folds, faults, joints, cleavage, schistosity, etc. In addition, students will be competent to make appropriate analysis and classifications of geological structures based on selected criteria. Using acquired knowledge during the course through the work on distinct examples from the field, the student will be able to perform the analysis and interpretation of the geological structures and clearly define geometry and origin of the ductile and brittle deformation in rocks of the Earth crusts. Also, they will be able to recognize complex tectonic conditions in the mesoscopic as well as macroscopic scale area. In addition, after laboratory exercises on stereographic net projection students will be able to properly process, analyze and interpret the field and other structural data. |
Content:
Theory teaching Concept of the geological structures. Attitude of planar and linear structural element and their symbolization on geological maps. Field work and structural data acquisition. Use of stereographic net projections in structural geology. Homogeneous and heterogeneous structural assemblies. Introduction to deformation in rocks (concept of stress and strain). Brittle and ductile deformation structures. Morphology, origin and kinematics of: joints, faults, folds as well secondary structures (cleavage, boudinage, mullion, rodding structures etc.). Introduction to structural analysis. Practical teaching Geological compasses techniques: how to measuring attitude of geological structures. Stereographic projection. Using of polar and equatorial stereographic projections (Schmidt and Wulff net’s) for presentation of planar and linear structural elements. Construction and interpretation of geological structures on maps and cross sections. Strain ellipsoid, principal strain axes and possible joint systems. Analysis of faults, kinematic indicators, sense of movement and stress axes. Analysis of folds formed in different settings and rock types, fold elements, vergence, classification of folds. Reconstruction of faulted folds on maps and in cross section. |
