Member of team: Dr. Axel Gerdes, male, Researcher at the GUF; 1994-1997 PhD Promotion; 1997-1999: post-Doc at the Department of Mineralogy and Petrology of the University of Granada; 2000-2001: post-Doc (HSO) at British Geological Survey, Keyworth, UK; 2001-2002: DFG International Fellowship at NERC Isotope Geosciences Lab, UK; 2002-2003: Research Scientist (HSO) at NERC Isotope Geosciences Lab, UK; Research area: geochemistry and isotope systematic of rocks as well as of natural and industrial materials; analysis of long-lived radionuclides (e.g. 236U, 239Pu, 240Pu, 241Pu ) in environment (methods development and future aspects).
Significance for the project: Dr. A. Gerdes is greatly experienced in application of analytical techniques in both fundamental mineralogy/petrology and geo-environmental studies. He has worked in many laboratories worldwide and his competency in laboratory management will be of particular importance for project implementation.

Member of team: Dr. Heidi Höfer, female, mineralogist/crystallographer; Researcher at the GUF; PhD 1989, University of Köln; 1990-1995: Scientific Researcher at the Max Plank Institute, Mainz. Research area: Development of an in-situ method for determining oxidation state of iron in solid materials using microprobe technique ("Flankenmethode"); quantitative analysis of light elements (O, N, B) by electron probe microanalysis.
Significance for the project: Dr. Heidi Höfer is responsible for maintenance and running the laboratory of microprobe which is directly complementary with the core equipment to be supplied during project implementation. This will be of great significance for integrating the purchased SEM-EDS into the existing infrastructure of the UB-FMG.
