The development of hg in Serbia
Biographies of professors and researchers
- 1853. Josif Pancic delivered the first geology lectures at the Department of Natural-Engineering of the Lyceum
- 1880. Jovan Zujovic headed the newly founded Chair of Mineralogy and Geology at the High School in Belgrade
- 1883. The Geological Survey of the High School was founded in Belgrade.
- 1893. Cvijic completed his PhD in Vienna and returned to Belgrade. Professor of geography at the University of Belgrade, Rector of the University, member and Chairman of the Serbian Royal Academy
- In 1897 Svetolik Radovanovic published the book GROUNDWATER, which was the first synthetic hydrogeological work not only in Serbia, but also in South East Europe and the Balkans. It contains an analysis of basic hydrogeological terms – aquifer, source, well, thermal and mineral waters. "Groundwater" is a popular and serious scientific work, a monograph and a text-book. Its multi-dimensional character contributed to the dissemination of the scientific knowledge of ground and thermal waters.
- In 1921, the Engineering Geology Unit was established at the Civil Engineering Division of the Technical Faculty at the University of Belgrade. In 1948 the Faculty of Mining with Mining and Geology Divisions was established; in 1949 the latter division became the Faculty of Geology. In 1956, the Faculty of Mining and the Faculty of Geology merged into the Faculty of Mining and Geology which currently still exists. The major FMG in former Yugoslavia, the Faculty has two major divisions: Mining and Geology. The Geology division includes six departments (former institutes), one of which is the Department of Hydrogeology.
- In 1971, the Department of Hydrogeology was established. It has changed names (Group, Institute) and curriculums but not significantly its organizational structure. A total of 600 students, or an average of fourteen hydrogeological engineers yearly, graduated from 1971 through 2006 . The Department at present includes about 200 full-and part-time students in the five-year programme at the undergraduate level. On average about 30 students apply annually to HG. The Department has 19 permanent employees and 15 researchers.
