Materials Technologies

Study program:
Environmental Engineering (III semester -BsC)
Mining Engineering (III semester -BsC)
Petroleum Engineering (III semester -BsC)
Name of subject: Materials Technologies
Instructors:
Prof. Suzana Lutovac, Dr Miloš Gligorić
Status: Compulsory
ECTS: 6
Prerequisites: /
Course Objectives:
The main objective of the course is to acquaint students with the manner of obtaining certain materials, their properties and application areas in mining. The choice of materials for the production of individual parts, structures, machines and other equipment depends largely on the physical and mechanical characteristics of the materials themselves, processing capabilities, exploitation methods, material resistance to chemical, and other corrosion influences, etc. Due to insufficient knowledge of materials, failures, fractures, irrational use, and similar happen very often in practice.
Learning Outcomes:
With the acquired knowledge, students are capable to execute the proper selection of materials for making some structural parts, equipment and machines intended for mining.
Content:

Theory teaching
Characteristics and division of materials. Construction materials, fuels and lubricants of importance for mining. Structural materials: metals, alloys, mineral binders, cement, concrete, wood, clay, ceramics, rubber, plastic (obtaining, properties, protection and application). Fuels and lubricants: fuels, lubricants, industrial water (preparation, properties, protection and application). Mining explosives and systems for the initiation of explosives. Contemporary materials: composites, ceramic and polymer materials.

Practical teaching
Tensile testing. True stress-strain curve. Determination of the steel elasticity module. Hardness testing. Testing of steel ropes. Testing of mechanical properties of wood. The curve of the aggregate screening, the pressure and the bending strength of the cement and the class of concrete. Testing conveyor belts and their regeneration procedures. Determination of thermal power, mineral impurities-ash, sulfur and moisture in fuels. Determination of the viscosity and the ignition point of the oil. Physical-chemical and technical-blasting characteristics of mining explosives. Physical-chemical and technical-mining properties of the means for initiation of explosive charges. Testing of explosives at the university mine at Avala.
