Course Description

Study program: Geotechnics (VI semester -OAS), Geotechnics (VIII semester -OAS)

Name of subject: Urban Geology

Prerequisites: -

Course Objectives: Introduction students with solving numerous complex geological and geotechnical problems in urban tarrain.

Learning Outcomes: Acquiring knowledge and skills for successful solving complex geological and geotechnical problems in urban terrain.


Theory teaching
Definition of urban places.Types of cities. Geology of urban terrain. The basic components of urban planing. Consideration: Geotechnical investigations for urban planing; Deep excavations for foundation of structures in the city and interaction with objects nearby; Measure of protection from negative effects of underground water; Construction of structures on unstable terrain, terrain with floods and on/in extreme high slope; Surface and subsurface structures; Geotechnical aspects of building in the old parts of the city or reconstruction of old parts of the cities; Geotechnical aspects of development and building in the new parts of the city; Municipal solid waste in cities; Objects for sport and recreations; Seismic microreonization of the cities; Supplying cities with water and building materials; Urban soil in areas of influence of surface (open pit mine) and subsurface (underground mine) mineral exploitations; Urban soil in areas with intensive industrial development; Cities on the shores; Cities in the hilly areas; Urban soil in seismic active areas; Urban terrain in Neogene basein; Geological and geotechnical aspects of sustainable development of the cities; Measure of environment’s protection in the urban areas. Case studies.

Practical teaching
Exercises follow material of lectures.
