Prerequisites: -

Course Objectives: Obtaining knowledge of basic concepts of mineral deposits science, environments and conditions of mineral deposit creation, spatial control factors, geology and genesis of different mineral deposit types. Special attention is on systematics of genetic types and on correlating different raw mineral materials with series, groups and classes of mineral deposits.

Learning Outcomes: Mastering knowledge in the field of mineral deposit systematics, their genesis, correlation with specific geotectonic units and Earth’s crust evolution. Mastering knowledge about genetic and economic types of mineral deposits and their characteristics. Gathering knowledge for correct selection of methods for mineral deposit’s prospecting and exploration.


Theory teaching
Introduction. Basic terms about mineral deposits. Material composition of mineral deposits. Metallogenic units and epochs. Endogenic mineral deposits: magmatic deposits group, analysis of genetic classes of magmatic mineral deposits, mineral raw materials of magmatic deposits. Magmatic-hydrothermal and hydrothermal mineral deposits, analysis of genetic classes of magmatic-hydrothermal and hydrothermal mineral deposits, metallic and non-metalic mineral raw materials of magmatic-hydrothermal and hydrothermal mineral deposits. Exogenic mineral deposits: supergene (weathering) mineral deposits, sedimentary mineral deposits. Analysis of genetic groups of supergene and sedimentary mineral deposits, metallic and non-metallic mineral raw materials of supergene and sedimentary mineral deposits. Metamorphogenic mineral deposits, genetic classes of metamorphogenic mineral deposits, mineral raw materials of metamorphogenic mineral deposits. Fossil energy deposits: coal deposits, oil shales, petroleum and natural gas deposits.

Practical teaching
Lectures are followed by exercises. Exercises include analysis of characteristic economic types of deposits of metallic and non-metallic raw mineral materials and fossil fuels. Exercises also include: macroscopic ore samples determination, mineral composition analysis, graphical display of characteristic morphogenetic types of mineral deposits and ore bodies.
