Assessment of Petroleum resources

Study program:
Economic Geology (X semester -MsC)
Geology of oil and gas (X semester -MsC)
Name of subject: Assessment of Petroleum resources
Instructors:
Prof. Nikoleta Aleksić
Status: Compulsory
ECTS: 4
Prerequisites: Petroleum geology
Course Objectives:
Gaining knowledge on classification of petroleum resources and on methods of their exploration and assessment. Mastering in techniques of assessment of petroleum potential of sedimentary basins, petroleum prospects and discovered deposits. Ranking of petroleum prospects and making exploration decisions.
Learning Outcomes:
Gaining basic and specific knowledge on assessment of oil and gas resources in a sedimentary basin, leads and prospects, as well as on independent calculation and economic estimate of petroleum resources and reserves.
Content:

Theory teaching
Classification of petroleum resources. Assessment of prospective petroleum resources in a basin and in prospects. Calculation of generative petroleum potential. Analysis of source rocks quality and transformation ratio of kerogen into oil and gas. Risk analysis and quantification during prospect appraisal. Preparation of prospect`s maps, prospect`s data-sheets and analysis of possible migration paths. Decision making techniques in petroleum exploration. Calculating of resources and reserves in discovered deposits.

Practical teaching
Calculation of petroleum potential of a sedimentary basin. Prospect assessment before drilling: chance of success and possible size analysis. Assessment of prospective and discovered oil and gas accumulations. Prospects ranking and various economic criteria. Calculation of resources and reserves of petroleum deposits - specific examples.
