Physical Crystallography

Study program:
Geology (III semester -PhD)
Name of subject: Physical Crystallography
Instructors:
Prof. Aleksandar Kremenović
Status: Optional
ECTS: 10
Prerequisites: none
Course Objectives:
The physical properties of crystals are studied using crystallographic methods.
Learning Outcomes:
After passing a course, students should be familiar with theoretical basis in the field of crystallography and crystal physics.
Content:

Theory teaching
Ionic and covalent crystals. Crystal lattice energy. Molecular crystals. Optical properties of solid state materials. Mechanism of electromagnetic radiation absorption. X-ray absorption. Electrical properties of solid state materials: dielectrics, metals, semiconductors and superconductors. Photoelectric and thermoelectric effect. Magnetic properties of solid state materials: ferromagnetism and antiferromagnetism. Diamagnetism and paramagnetism.

Practical teaching
Practical exercises are closely connected to lectures. One seminar work is planed to be realized.

Suggested Reading List:
  1. Nye, J.F., (1985) Physical properties of crystals. Their representation by tensors and matrices, Clarendon Press, Oxford.
  2. Sirotin, Yu.I., Shaskolskaya, M.P., (1982) Fundamentals of crystal physics, Mir Publishers Moscow.
Conduct of the Course:
For the sake of active participation of students on the curse, beside classical lectures presented with aid of audio-visual methods, seminar works are planed to be realized.
