Crystallography – Selected Chapters

Study program:
Geology (I semester -PhD)
Name of subject: Crystallography – Selected Chapters
Instructors:
Prof. Sabina Kovač
Status: Optional
ECTS: 10
Prerequisites: none
Course Objectives:
The purpose of the course is that the PhD student focuses on the study of certain crystallographic disciplines which are necessary for the work of his doctoral thesis. The chapters that student will prepare for the exam will be selected by the teacher, mentor and student with the intention to get more knowledge of an area important for his work.
Learning Outcomes:
Depending on the educational profile, PhD students will learn how to determine: the morphological characteristics of the crystals; corresponding symmetry; parameters of the unit cell and space group; unknown crystal structure; microstructural parameters; to transform the axes of the crystals, the reflection indexes, the origin of the unit cell and the coordinates of the atoms; to interpret results, describe and display the structure; use different crystallographic programs and crystallographic databases.
Content:

Theory teaching
Morphological characteristics of crystals. Symmetrical characteristics of crystals. Space groups. Crystallochemical characteristics of some structural groups. Identification of minerals and other crystalline phases. Single-phase and multi-phase systems. Determination of intensity and interplanar spacing. Unit cell. Determining the crystallographic parameters of the unit cell. Relationship between crystallographic parameters and properties of material.

Practical teaching
Practical exercises are closely connected to lectures. One seminar work is planned to be realized.
