Fundamentals of Seismometry

Study program:
Geology of oil and gas (VIII semester -MsC)
Geophysics (VI semester -BsC)
Name of subject: Fundamentals of Seismometry
Instructors:
Prof. Dragana Đurić, Branislav Sretković
Status: Compulsory
ECTS: 5
Prerequisites: -
Course Objectives:
The course goal is to provide the basic knowledge in seismic methods (both refraction and reflection seismic) of investigations, starting with acquisition of field data and including the basic seismic data processing procedures. Also it would deliver the basic understanding of reflection seismic data interpretation and develop interpretation skills regarding refraction seismic method and its application in solving different geological, civil engineering, environmental… and other problems.
Learning Outcomes:
The outcome of the course is to provide well trained students in field measurements techniques by using up to date equipment as well as students capable to perform basic processing and interpretation of field data. These skills should make the basis for the further educational improvements during master level of studying.
Content:

Theory teaching
Seismic waves (P, S, surface waves...). Various types of seismic wave’s sources in refraction and reflection seismic methods. Instrumentation and various data acquisition techniques. Determination of the data acquisition optimal parameters (geophone groups, shoot point interval, receivers interval….). Seismic waves as noise (surface waves, ground roll, multiple reflections…). Propagation of seismic waves in homogenous and isotropic media (wave fronts and seismic rays). Propagation of seismic waves in horizontally layered half-space. Refraction and reflection of seismic waves. Time-distance curves (refraction and reflection) for different subsurface models (horizontally layered, dipping interface, fault model…) - forward modelling. 2D, 3D and 4D seismic reflection investigations and its application in solving different geological problems (Hydrocarbon exploration, civil engineering, hydrogeological etc.). Deep seismic sounding. VSP method.

Practical teaching
Solving theoretical and practical problems through computation of synthetic refraction seismic data. Reflection seismic data processing. Various ways of displaying results of reflection seismic data interpretation.
