Fundamentals of Gravimetry

Study program:
Geophysics (V semester -BsC)
Name of subject: Fundamentals of Gravimetry
Instructors:
Prof. Ivana Vasiljević, Dr Snežana Ignjatović
Status: Compulsory
ECTS: 5
Prerequisites: Mathematics 2, Physics 1
Course Objectives:
The objective of the course is to educate students about the fundamental principles of gravimetry, from the field measurements to the compilation and basic interpretation of gravity maps, as well as how to apply gravimetry for solving practical problems in different types of geological investigations.
Learning Outcomes:
Learning outcomes include acquiring the knowledge and proficiency necessary for working with the gravimetric equipment, field measurements, data processing, work with the gravity databases and basic interpretation of gravity maps.
Content:

Theory teaching
History of the gravimetry. Basic types of gravimetric investigations. Earth's gravity field. Theoretical (normal) and measured gravity values. Variations of the gravity field. Gravity anomalies. Gravimetric instruments. Gravity measurements (ground, underground, marine, aero, satellite). Field procedures for the gravity measurements. The density of minerals and rocks. Density measurement and determination techniques. The direct and indirect task solutions. Gravity anomalies over the bodies of simple shape. Gravity data processing and analysis. Basic interpretation of the gravity data. Application of the gravimetry in geology and other areas.

Practical teaching
Solving calculating tasks, theoretical and practical problems. Gravity data processing. Compilation and geological interpretation of the gravity maps. Writing a seminar paper on the assigned topic.

Suggested Reading List:

  2. Miroslav Starčević, Aleksandar Đorđević; 1998. Osnove geofizike II (gravimetrijske metode, geomagnetske metode), Univerzitet u Beogradu, Beograd.
Conduct of the Course:
Computer presentations are used during the lectures and exercises. Presentations are available to students in order to make the learning process easier. Exercises are practical and they are following the content of lectures in order to enable a better understanding of the subject. The knowledge is also acquired through the seminar paper.
