Course Objectives:
Application of contemporary methodologies of structural geology in order to solve relative and absolute spatial and chronological relationships between complex geological structures.
Learning Outcomes:
After completing the course students will be able to analyze and interpret complex geological structures. This will be done using structural data collected from the field. The objective is to classify structural data – its morphology, origin, spatial and temporal relationships and by critically thinking resolve complicated tectonic/structural regional context of the research area.
Content:

Theory teaching
Study of the spatial distribution of structural elements. Statistical procedures in analysis of geological structures. Criteria for analysis of ductile and brittle deformations. Relative/absolute time relationships of ductile and brittle structures. Shear sense indicators in ductile and semi-ductile rocks. Kinematic analysis in shear zones. Mezoscopic shear indicators in semi-ductile and ductile shear zones. Structures within the shear zone (c, s-structure), outcrop analysis. Mylonite zones. Kinematic analysis of rupture and fault systems. Statistical analysis of structural data in tectonic settings context. Analysis and interpretation of superposed folding in complex deformation condition.

Practical teaching
Application of procedures and methods of spatial and temporal analysis of geological structures would be carried out through the practical work of PhD students on structural data collected during his fieldwork which cover the research area defined by the topic of his PhD thesis.
