Mineral Processing Reagents

Study program:
Mineral Processing (X semester -MsC)
Name of subject: Mineral Processing Reagents
Instructors:
Prof. Predrag Lazić
Status: Optional
ECTS: 6
Prerequisites: -
Course Objectives:
Introduction to students to basic physicochemical properties of flotation reagents and mechanisms of their activity in flotation pulp.
Learning Outcomes:
Theoretical and practical training students to work with flotation reagents, and the acquisition of knowledge that allows them mastering the master’s and doctoral studies in the field of mineral processing.
Content:

Theory teaching
Classification of flotation reagents and their physicochemical properties. Collectors - anionic collectors (xanthates, aerophlots, mercaptans, thiocarbanilides, fatty acids, sulfuric acid products); cationic collectors. Non-ionising collectors (collectors with sulfur and apolar collectors). Amphoteric collectors. Mechanism of adsorption of the collector. Modifiers - inorganic (acids, bases and salts), organic (non-ionising, anion and cationic polymers). Test I. Frothers-acid (compounds based on phenol and alkylarylsulphonate), alkaline, neutral (based on aromatic, alicyclic and aliphatic alcohols, ether-based frothers). Flocculants, coagulants, dispersants. Mechanisms of interaction of certain reagents at the interfaces: gas / liquid, liquid / mineral. Test II.

Practical teaching
Preparation of flotation reagents for experimental work. Application of certain physicochemical methods (electrophoresis, determination of Eh in the function of pH, IC spectrophotometry, ATR-IR, TG, DTA, DSC, determination of surface tension and contact angle, etc.) in order to investigate the mechanism of action of flotation reagents at the interfaces in the flotation pulp ( sulphide minerals, salt minerals).
