Coal Preparation

Study program:
Mineral Processing (X semester -MsC)
Name of subject: Coal Preparation
Instructors:
Prof. Milena Kostović
Status: Optional
ECTS: 6
Prerequisites: -
Course Objectives:
Introducing with the industrial processes of coal preparation and utilization in the aim of its evaluation and of obtaining qualitative product of clean coal, as well as other products from coal, suitable for further industrial use and processing. Introducing with the technological parameters of the process, with control of coal cleaning process and how this control is achieved, as well as with the technological, economic and environmental effects achieved in applied industrial processes.
Learning Outcomes:
Qualifications for independent selection of the appropriate industrial process of coal preparation or cleaning, integrated, and through individual stages of the process, on the basis of an analysis of influential parameters, i.e. the characteristics of different types of run-of-mine coal, the purpose and use of the products and users requirements; independent creation of technological process flowsheet with selection of appropriate machines and devices in the process
Content:

Theory teaching
Coal – genesis, characteristics, classification. Technical and elemental analysis of coal. Purpose and use of coal; final products of coal processing and utilization; user requirements. Balance of coal cleaning; prediction of results. Control of coal cleaning process; the separation efficiency and parameters of separation efficiency (partition coefficient, imperfection, Ecart probable, egares). Industrial processes of coal preparation or cleaning: comminution, screening, classification, manual sorting, gravity concentration and flotation. Coal briquetting. Coal powder. Industrial processes of coal utilization: drying, coking, semi-coking (Schwelung), gasification and liquefaction of coal.

Practical teaching
Laboratory exercises (experimental and theoretical); introduction to the process of coal cleaning in all phases of the process (crushing, screening, classification, water gravity concentration, heavy media separation); analysis of coal cleaning process (balance, separation efficiency and parameters of separation efficiency). Coal briquetting; application of binders.
