Consolidation of Fine grained Material

Study program:
Mineral Processing (X semester -MsC)
Name of subject: Consolidation of Fine grained Material
Instructors:
Prof. Milena Kostović
Status: Optional
ECTS: 6
Prerequisites: -
Course Objectives:
Introduction to the principles, possibilities and methods of mineral agglomeration.
Learning Outcomes:
Training for analysis, designing and exploitation of system for agglomeration of fine sized ores, especially briquetting.
Content:

Theory teaching
Definition and classification of the agglomeration process. Definition of briquetting, pelletizing, sintering, agglomeration. Specific characteristics of products for agglomeration. Briquetting. Classification of briquetting (according to the type of binder, to the way of pressure transmittion). Theoretical basis of briquetting – forces that operate at different stages in the process of briquetting, mechanism of briquetting without binders, mechanism of briquetting with binders. Operations of briquetting. Description of the process of briquetting. The parameters of the process (the moisture content in coal, ash content in coal, particle size and particle size distribution of coal, pressure and changes in pressure during the creation of briquettes, changes in pressure, type of briquetting, types and contents of binders). Binders. Role of binders. Classification. Organic binders(starch, molasses), inorganic binders (liquid glass, bentonite, lime), tar (from lignite) and bitumen (from coal, from oil), etc. Machines and equipments for briquetting. Parameters of briquette quality. Compressive strength, shutter strength, water absorption, behavior in firebox. Pelletizing. Theoretical basis of pelettizing. Operation of pelettizing (plate, drum). Technological basis. The parameters of the process (moisture content, particle size and particle size distribution, types and contents of binders, inclination of plate, rpm of plate or drum, water "spray", the time of pelletizing). The parameters of quality of pellets. Size of pellets, compressive strength of green pellet, compressive strength of pellets, shutter strength of pellets, behavior of pellets in firebox. Machines and devices for pelettizing. The specifics of the process of agglomeration of different mineral raw materials. Agglomeration of coal, agglomeration of metallic and non metallic ores. Pelletizing of lignite under low pressure.

Practical teaching
Briquetting of coal. Agglomeration with and without binders. The influence of type and amount of added binder. Influence of pressure. Analysis of briquette quality. Pelletizing of coal. The influence of type and amount of binder added. Pelletizing of iron ore. Influence the types and amounts of binder added.
