Mineral Deposits and Basics of Petrography

Study program:
Environmental Engineering (II semester -BsC)
Mining Engineering (II semester -BsC)
Petroleum Engineering (II semester -BsC)
Name of subject: Mineral Deposits and Basics of Petrography
Instructors:
Prof. Zoran Miladinović, Prof. Kristina Šarić
Status: Compulsory
ECTS: 6
Prerequisites: -
Course Objectives:
Introducing students with most significant genetic and economic types of different mineral deposits, i.e. with basic features of the most widespread rocks, as well as their practical identification based on their physical characteristics.
Learning Outcomes:
Gathering basic knowledge, necessary for further studies and work.
Content:

Theory teaching
Petrography section: There are three blocks in petrography section, i.e. three genetic groups of rocks: magmatic, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks. Each block is divided in two units. First unit includes theoretical basis of each rock group, second unit includes petrography of significant species of rocks from corresponding rock groups. Mineral deposits section: General characteristics of mineral deposits. Mineral deposits as a science, aim and significance; term definitions (ore body, deposit, occurrences, deposit halos, etc.). Material composition of mineral raw material, mineral paregenesis, ore structure and texture. Morphology of ore bodies. Spatial orientation, relation of ore bodies with host rocks. Structures. Metallogenetic units an metallogenetic analysis. Genetic classification of mineral deposits. Endogenic mineral deposits; Exogenic mineral deposits; Metamorphogenic mineral deposits. Iron and steel metal deposits. Base metal deposits. Light and rare metal deposits. Precious and radioactive metal deposits. Non-metallic mineral deposits. Introduction. Element deposits. Crystal and mineral deposits; Rock deposits. Building material mineral deposits. For all raw material groups: Characteristics, quality, reserves, application. Genetic and economic types of deposits. Worldwide mineral deposits examples. Technogenic mineral deposits. Coal deposits. Classifications, genesis, deposit characteristics.

Practical teaching
Study units are accompanied by exercises. Practical student training in identification of various magmatic, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks using specimens from faculty’s petrographic collection.
