Stability of Underground Roadways and Objects

Study program:
Mine Surveying (X semester -MsC)
Underground Construction (X semester -MsC)
Underground Mining of Mineral Deposits (X semester -MsC)
Name of subject: Stability of Underground Roadways and Objects
Instructors:
Prof. Nebojša Gojković
Status: Optional
ECTS: 6
Prerequisites: Rock and soil mechanics
Course Objectives:
The objective of the course is to introduce students with with the basic mining methods and techniques of underground chambers and facilities design in aspect of long-term stability and successful exploitation of mineral resources.
Learning Outcomes:
The course will provide students to understand the problems of interaction between the working environment (rosk mass) and exploitation operations, and determining the basic rock properties as the starting point for further mining activities. The underground chambers and facilities stability is the basis of the study of rock mechanics in order to perform safe mining operations, which is the imperative of modern underground mining exploitation.
Content:

Theory teaching
During the course, students will be introduced to the methods for assessing underground chambers and facilities stability as scientific basis for their designing, construction and use. Knowing the physical-mechanical, technical and deformability properties of the rock is essential for determination of the appropriate data for further analysis. Students will be introduced with the significance of studying the stress state as well as the method for analyzing the influence of mining works on the rockmass. In particular, they will be introduce to the methods for analyzing the underground mining facilities stability.

Practical teaching
Students will be introduced to the importance of the rock and soil material strength theory. The basic methodology of analyzing rockmass stress state around underground facilities eill be presented. The methods for analyzing stress redistribution around the underground chambers of a rectangular, ellipsoidal and circular cross-section will be introduced. The most up-to-date methods for determining the stability of underground facilities will be studied in detail.
