Methods of Excavation of Decorative Stone

Study program:
Underground Mining of Mineral Deposits (VIII semester -BsC)
Name of subject: Methods of Excavation of Decorative Stone
Instructors:
Prof. Branko Gluščević
Status: Optional
ECTS: 5
Prerequisites: -
Course Objectives:
Gaining knowledge about research specificity and geological factors that influence the choice of technical solutions and underground excavation technologies is the main goal of the course. Furthermore, the course should provide the professional and scientific basis of which students will be able to design and execute works on the opening, preparation, exploitation and processing of ornamental stone
Learning Outcomes:
Theoretical and expert knowledge necessary for studying the subsystem of excavation in the mine system as a production and organizational environment.
Content:

Theory teaching
Decorative (architectural) stone is exploited mostly by surface methods. However, in the past decades, underground exploitation has been intensively developing. This is influenced by a number of factors, among which the most important are market, ambient-architectural, cultural-historical, geological and ecological. Underground exploitation of ornamental stone has a number of specificity in technical and technological terms in relation to the exploitation of other mineral resources. These specificity primarily arise from the market requirements to obtain a quality stone block that will, after appropriate processing, quantity and quality, provide a sales price at a level that guarantees profitable operations of the mine. Methods and technologies of exploitation and processing of ornamental stone are essentially the content of the course. In addition to the inevitable preliminary presentation of all the factors that condition them and the technical and economic and environmental effects that can be achieved by underground exploitation of the deposit.
