Oil and Gas Transportation

Study program:
Petroleum Engineering (VII semester -BsC)
Name of subject: Oil and Gas Transportation
Instructors:
Prof. Dušan Danilović, Prof. Miroslav Crnogorac
Status: Compulsory
ECTS: 5
Prerequisites: Passed courses from the previous year.
Course Objectives:
The aim of the course is to familiarize with the technology of pipeline transportation of oil and gas. The transport of oil and gas forms a significant part of the overall process of oil and gas production. Students study the dimensioning of pipelines for different types of flow and are familiar with all elements of the transport system (pipes, fittings, pumps and compressors). Special attention is dedicated to learning the API-5L standard, which defines all the necessary characteristics of the pipe. The selection of optimum pipeline parameters such as route, diameter, material quality and pressure class are analyzed in a timely manner. Investments in oil and gas pipelines as well as exploitation costs are also considered.
Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of the course, students are trained to design pipelines and gas pipelines and determine their optimal parameters and equipment.
Content:

Theory teaching
The flow of oil and gas through pipelines. Isothermal stationary oil flow. Equation of pressure drop for laminar-isothermal flow. Equation of pressure drop for turbulent isothermal flow of uncompressible fluid (petroleum). Equivalent lengths and equivalent diameters. Pressure drop in fluid flow through closures and fittings. Non-isothermal oil flow. Equations for calculating the pressure drop in a non-isothermal flow. Equation for calculating the pressure drop in a non-isothermal turbulent flow. Gas flow. Equation for isothermal stationary gas flow in a horizontal pipeline. Isothermal flow of gas through parallel pipelines and pipelines of different diameters. Isothermal flow of gas in the sloping pipeline. Isothermal gas flow in the vertical pipeline. Isothermal flow of gas in the distribution pipeline. Changing the gas temperature when flowing through the pipeline. Two-phase flow. Equation for two-phase flow in horizontal pipelines. The flow of non-Newton fluids through pipelines. Classification of fluids according to rheology. Paraffin oil and characteristics. Pour point. Transportation of highly paraffin oil. Oil pipelines and gas pipelines. Pumps - types of pumps and their characteristics. Pipes, types and characteristics. Calculating wall thickness. Elements for shaping piping-fittings. Selection of optimal pipeline parameters. Criteria for the selection of optimal pipeline parameters. Determination of investment in oil pipeline. Maintenance of pipelines. Mistakes on the pipeline.
