Combustion

Study program:
Environmental Engineering (VII semester -BsC)
Petroleum Engineering (VII semester -BsC)
Name of subject: Combustion
Instructors:
Prof. Marija Živković
Status: Optional
ECTS: 5
Prerequisites: -
Course Objectives:
The objective of the course is to educate and inform students with combustion processes, basic concepts and methods for calculating characteristic properties, environmental aspects of combustion and possibilities for reducing emissions of harmful substances.
Learning Outcomes:
After passing an exam, a student can calculate heating value, quantity and composition of flue gases for different fuels and excess air coefficients, determine combustion temperature, enthalpy of flue gases, flame velocity. Students are educated about basics of combustion of liquid, solid and gaseous fuels. They are able to identify factors that influence emissions of harmful substances, as well as possible options to reduce them. Students can determine emissions of greenhouse gases due to combustion.
Content:

Theory teaching
Classification of fuels. Stoichiometry of combustion. Theoretical air. Real air. Air fuel ratio. Excess air coefficients. Composition of flue gas. Higher and lower heating value. Theoretical (adiabatic) flame temperature. Enthalpy of flue gas. I-t diagram for flue gas. Determination of excess air coefficient. Ignition temperature. Self- ignition. Flammability limits. Flame propagation in gases. Flame speed. Forced ignition. Concentration limits of flame propagation. Diffusion flame, premixed flame. Heat load, power, efficiency. Burners. Wobbe index. Combustion of gaseous fuels. Combustion of liquid fuels. Burners for gaseous and liquid fuels.Combustion of solid fuels. Ecological aspects of combustion processes. NOx mechanisms and emission control. CO emission. Emission limits. Advanced combustion technology.

Practical teaching
Problems related to the topics given in lectures are being addressed. Preparation of written and oral presentation of seminar work is envisaged, to provide more detailed elaboration of the topic presented in lectures.
